2009 Winter Carnival of Magic

The second day of the 36th Annual Winter Carnival of Magic kicked off with a lecture by Ice McDonald. Ice gave several valuable tips for improving performance. The first half of his lecture focused on the key elements of act development, practice habits, and showmanship. Ice also demonstrated and explained a handful of effects including several tips on handling doves. He finished the lecture with advise on promotional materials and impressing potential clients.

Ice's lecture was followed by a lecture on creative magic given by Arthur Trace. Trace discussed the importance of using a personal motto to help shape your show. He also covered a handful of effects including duality, a fan force, silver certificate, and a version of card at any number. He finished his lecture with a performace and brief explanation of his cups, balls, and rings routine.

Trace's lecture was followed by the close up contest. There were 10 competitors in the competition this year. The performers and briefly what they performed are listed below:

• Hannibal - Coin manipulations, push-pop routine
• Ricky Boone and Magic X2 - Jumbo straw production, 3-card monte
• Ed Ripley - World famous two-coin trick, 3 versiona of cups and balls
• James Schwabb - Math lesson on probability
• Andrew Hyder - Coin manipulation, card manipulations
• Matthew Maxwell Myers - Bill production, Cig magic, jewel production
• Lion Fludd - One cup and ball-bearing routine
• Merritt Ambrose - Signed card to sealed deck, bottle through table, signed card to Sealed Bottle
• Larry Finley - Computer Program Card Prediction
• Caleb Miles - Changing Die, Finger Chopper, Ball and Vase
